Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam and Singapore

For 2025, I wanted to visit Vietnam’s central coast and debated various cities before committing to visit Da Nang. It took me a few months to decide what part of central Vietnam to visit so I didn’t pay attention to the fact that the government would be celebrating Reunification Day in the month I was visiting. For the history buffs, this marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam conflict with America. I was using a number of itineraries to make this travel work. The complications came from booking an extra seat for the transpacific flight and using miles and promotions for the shorter legs. My flight path was one short trip to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and then three seats for a party of two from SFO to Changi Airport (SIN) and then miles from SIN to Da Nang International Airport  (DAD)/Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN). I basically had three round trip itineraries for this trip! I did this because I have found that booking an extra economy seat ...

Bandon/North Bend, Oregon and Guerneville, CA

Image
A very quick two state trip for a personal family business affair to two small rural towns. I hopped onto a United flight with a layover in San Francisco International Airport to Bandon State Airport in Oregon. After seeing who was on the small jet plane, Bandon looks like a popular golf getaway for the tech bros coming from the Bay Area . The airport operates only one flight and is only open during the boarding and deplaning of the SF flight. It seems most folks drive to this area? It is one of the smallest airports I’ve ever visited where the TSA agent to passenger ratio was 1:10. Luckily, everything is compact so you can get in line for your rental car next to the baggage belt. Enterprise operates out of here but the main location is in town. A couple of employees come only for a few hours. The return was easy as the porter was waiting to drive back the vehicle to the main location. The cars are parked inside the small airport parking lot. We had a flight delay on the return so I o...

Iowa City, Iowa

Image
2025 marks the first time I've been in the state of Iowa. Hopped onto an United Airlines flights to head towards Eastern Iowa Airport  and get into Cedar Rapids. Surprisingly, the taxi fare from the airport to Cedar Rapids was near $100. Luckily the Uber fare back to the airport was a third. I hadn't realized that Cedar Rapids is essentially the University of Iowa. The University is the major employer for the area. Since I was here for the week for a work obligation, my experience in the city narrowed down to the eateries in the city. Also, the weather was nearing 0 which didn't entice me to investigate the surrounding areas. Direct flights into Eastern Iowa Airport on United was mostly from Chicago or Denver. I had a long layover at ORD so I opted to stay inside the United Club. I hadn't realized how busy the lounges have gotten and when I went into a lounge, I was informed only one of the three Clubs were taking day passes. At Denver International Airport, all clubs w...

Maui, Hawaii

I had taken advantage of a Southwest Airlines Companion Pass promotion in the prior quarter and so I used my earned companion pass to Maui. I had hoped to used it more than once but it worked out this way. I was able to find a Jeep through Enterprise . I didn't know if I would need a Jeep but there are parts of Maui that a 4x4 is easiest and I was able to get the new hybrid Rubicon.  I checked into the Hilton Grand Vacations Club Maui Bay Villas . It is one of Hilton's newer timeshare properties and still in construction on their final phases. If you are expecting a full resort, this isn't quite the property. I characterize the property as a high scale apartment complex with beach access. Unfortunately for me, the week prior the island experienced a mudslide due to heavy rains. Between the fires last year and the mudslides this year, Maui is not having a good time of it. The hotel was in the path of the mudslide but they cleared alot of it during the weekend. The mudslides...
