Snowy Seattle
I'm here for a wedding and am now a firm advocate that people should not marry at a time when inclimate weather will affect people's travel plans. I have family coming in stages throughout my time in Seattle and have decided to switch hotels to accommodate the growth and shrinkage of the number of people staying in the city. The first day, I was essentially stuck at LAX. For some reason, the plane I was on had to return back to LAX to resolve some mechanical problems. I wished the plane had dropped us off at SFO instead of LAX as it would have been infinitely easier to get to Seattle from SFO. Instead I was guaranteed a flight that would leave 9 hours later..not so appealing. After navigating the standby scenarios, I made it to Seattle within 12 hours after this whole crazy day started. At least I saved myself 5hours as the guaranteed flight would have gotten me to Seattle at 1 am. Blech.
My sister, on the other hand, landed on time in Seattle and went around the city while waiting for me and checked into our hotel, Hampton Inn and Suites. I think I may have stayed there at one point as the paperwork indicated that I was a return guest. It was your typical Hampton Inn, a little older but very serviceable. The only crinkle was that I was never able to get onto their wireless network. Not sure what the deal was so I utilized their business center alot more. For lunch, we went to Icon Grill in downtown. It is "Americana" cuisine and it was very good. The mac'n'cheese was good, not too runny not too thick. I have to admit, I will never understand how people can eat mac'n'cheese as an entree. We shared meatball sliders and a grilled pear salad. Very excellent. The dessert was the only downer of the meal, we ordered the Candy Cane cake. It was a six layer cake alternating Red Velvet and White Chocolate layers with peppermint frosting. The cake was dry, probably sitting outside for a little bit. Luckily I had a latte to wash it down. Spent the rest of the afternoon at the Science Fiction and Music museum in the Space Needle area. Who knew that SciFi and rock would mix?
On the wedding day/reception, alot of family members decided to stay in Seattle because of the weather instead of driving back home. We also moved from the Hampton to the Homewood Suites Pike Place. The hotel was very nicely decorated and had a modern feel. Due to the number of people that was staying, I booked the double beds suite and it was large enough to accommodate the 'refugees' who didn't want to drive south.
We went to Pike Marketplace and saw what little we could on this snowy day. Also made an attempt at bumper cars when we drove to have dinner before everyone was heading home. Initially, we were going to have Vietnamese but ended up with a Chinese restaurant as it was the only one open. Luckily, the food was great! Harbor City BBQ Restaurant in Chinatown - 707 S King St Seattle, WA 98104-3017. 10 people ate for under $100, pretty good deal.
Afterwards, people went home and I went with my siblings to attempt to make a snowman. Failing miserably after being told by some Canadians the snow was too dry, we ended up at Quinn's, for some late night food and drinks. The wild boar sloppy joe hit the spot!
The next day, we moved to another Homewood Suites since it was only the three of us and we didn't need to stay in the heart of downtown. We moved to the Homewood Suites Seattle, I assumed the other Homewood Suites is newer because they are more of a "downtown" location than this one. A older but homey feeling facility, the location is near the Space Needle and you can view the ocean from certain rooms. They are in the middle of an upgrade, maybe it'll look nicer in a year.
We visited the Space Needle that night and saw the city glowing with lights. On the way back to our hotel, we came across makeshift materials for an impromptu sledding and the perfect hill/street incline. Being the hams my siblings are, they wanted a video....
The next day, we had only two goals in mind. Visit Pike Marketplace for a wood souvenir and make a snowman. Both were accomplished rather well and we had lunch at Serious Pie. Not your typical pizza, still very delicious. We ordered the "elk sausage, caramelized onion" pizza and the "clams, lemon thyme, pancetta" pizza and were very satisfied with our orders. I also had the best cannoli I've ever tasted (sorry NYC). Headed out to the airport but dropped off my sister (who was delayed for another day) at the Doubletree Guest Suites near Seattle airport. My mom and aunt was suppose to come up from Salem that night and also catch a flight the next day from the airport. It was a very nice hotel, at least from the lobby. The location couldn't be beat as the hotel sat in a very retail/entertainment complex and easy reach of the airport.
