Dallas
So, my week ended up in Texas for the weekend. American Airlines did a fire sale to Dallas and I jumped on the promotion. Decided to use this as an opportunity to visit some friends in the city to catch up on old times and deviate from Star Alliance. I don't typically fly American too often and it was interesting to experience a non-frequent flier status. One of the things I noticed is that even choosing seats in economy requires a fee when checking in online. I think that is more specific to American. I usually get on the plane pretty quickly so I wasn't sure what being in group 2 was going to be like. Even though both my flights were full, being in 2 wasn't bad. It is near the middle to back but plenty of space to still stuff your carry-on in the overhead storage. Any later, you'd have trouble finding spots for your carry-on stuff. Dallas Fort Worth airport is a nice airport for American. The terminals were nicely designed unlike the drab LAX version.
Grabbed a very early breakfast at Pete's Cafe at 3610 Belt Line Rd, Carrollton Farmers Branch, TX 75234 after landing. It was down the road from my friend's place and favorite breakfast spot. I had the Pete's Special. For $7, two blueberry pancakes with two eggs and breakfast meat. Not too bad, the cafe was really a tiny hole in the wall kind of place.
After taking a nap, cruised over to Downtown Carollton for a late lunch at Babe's Chicken. The restaurant let's you choose an entree of meat - fried chicken, fried catfish, chicken fried steak, pot roast, and roasted chicken - and all the sides you can eat. No menu, just tell them which one you want. I think there was dessert but I was too full to eat anything else. My friend told me that this was the best fried chicken in town and was featured on the Best Thing I Ever Had Food Network series. The chicken was good but I think there are better elsewhere. The problem for me eating in Texas and the South is that foods tend to be heavily salted which takes away the flavor for me as I hardly salt foods. So if you have salty taste buds, this place would be very good.
I also walked around the downtown Carollton area after lunch. The city appears to be the area in Dallas with all the ethnic influences as I saw plenty of Korean, Vietnamese, and Mexican restaurants and markets along the streets. Visited a throwback candy shop and toy store nearby before calling it a day.
The next morning, grabbed a quick breakfast at Flippin Out Coffee & Crepe. It is a drive thru coffee and crepe shack. There is an outdoor patio in the back if you want to sit and eat. I had the special which was the Spaniard. A chorizo and cheese crepe, it was good. The crepe was more burrito like than crepe. It is a good spot for a quick bite which worked for me as I had to head to the airport afterwards. Had I had more room, I would have tried a dessert crepe as I usually enjoy dessert zeroes more than savory. The place just opened up and was near my friend's place.
