Bishop



This past week was good for snowboarders. Mammoth Mountain received about two feet of snow which compelled me out of my home for a quick one day of boarding.

Since the trip was going to be short, headed up in the afternoon towards Bishop. On the way up, passed a billboard touting Nadia's Cakes which was a winner on Cupcake Wars. Intrigued and conveniently located off the freeway, I exited in Palmdale to try these cupcakes. I will say this is the first time I've been able to visit a contestant of the show. I have enjoyed watching the series and was curious of the quality level. For the most part, I'm an avid fan of Sprinkles and have found few comparable competitors. I bought the strawberry champagne, peanut butter, salted caramel and red velvet. My favorite was the strawberry champaign and I will make it a point to stop by if I'm in the area.


I checked into the Best Western Plus Holiday Spa Lodge. It has been over a year since I was last in Bishop. For a small town, I was surprised to see some new changes. Usually, the local businesses don't change much catering to the locals. On this trip, I noticed a few new restaurants and/or exterior makeovers. I decided to get dinner from Holy Smoke Texas BBQ on 772 N Main St., Bishop, CA 93514 and ordered the trip tip dinner. I found the meat tender and tasty. The southern baked potato was great. The cornbread was the only drawback to the meal. I could have used it as a puck in hockey instead of trying to eat it.

I have not been in a Best Western for some time. It is on the higher end in terms of price point for the town but I wanted to try a different hotel. I have found that heating is not always consistent and you pay for what you get sometimes. I was pleasantly surprised on the quality of the interior rooms. The hotel went through renovations a year ago and the amenities was very nice. The breakfast buffet was pretty good.

The next day, I went by the Great Basin Bakery on 275 S Main St., Bishop, CA 93514 for some snacks before heading up to Mammoth Mountain at the crack of dawn. I bought a "protein bar" and a cinnamon roll. After a day of boarding, I headed back making a pit stop at Erik Schat's Bakery. I'm a fan of the bread but I haven't really found any bakery items I really like.

Coming through Palmdale, I was not able to catch Nadia's business hours but I did notice that there was a Sonic Drive-in nearby. I'be always enjoyed the chicken toaster club and the limeades. I was able to enjoy a quick meal before heading home.

I'm back again for a conference. Flew out on United Airlines and was able to snag a first class seat on the way out. Luckily, the Hilton New Orleans St. Charles Avenue was able to accommodate an early check-in. The room was just the same as last time. They are renovating the executive lounge which made the perk inaccessible. I was given breakfast coupons for Luke in exchange. I tried the Southern Breakfast sans meat. I found the biscuit slightly salty but I'm prone to being salt sensitive. Not a good thing when it comes to Southern cooking. For lunch, went out to Ruby Slipper Café and ordered the Catfish St. Peter and a double Bellini. The meal was tasty and the service was quick and friendly. Did some antique and second hand clothing shopping before getting dessert at Sucre . The dessert shop sells gelato, baked goods, and chocolate. Salt Lake and Park City

Flew to Salt Lake City Airport for the holiday weekend on United . No new snow systems so I was not in a rush to get on the mountain and opted to bounce around the city before heading up to Park City. Although I could have opted for a cheaper rental, I stuck with the Toyota Tacoma from Avis . Lodging After landing, I checked into the Fairfield Inn & Suites Salt Lake City South . Normally, not a leisure destination but I thought it would be a good location to meet with friends who live south of the city. They ended up being unavailable that day and my companion's former colleagues weren't available (headquarters was just another 10 minutes south).  The next day, I checked into the Doubletree Park City - The Yarrow . Originally, the weekend was really expensive due to the holidays but the prices did drop to under $200 when I was checking in. In the Northwest

So, it seems Hyatt has somehow targeted me for promotions. I received an offer to stay in Seattle, a two night stay for the price of one, in one of their two new properties. It was a great offer and I scheduled a vacation to snowboard and visit family. After landing into Sea-Tac Airport on United Airlines . I found one thing interesting at Sea-Tac,thus airport is very family oriented. Usually, in women's restrooms you'll find vending dispensers for feminine products or over the counter medicine. In this airport, you won't find either but you will find diapers! :) I was able to priceline a rental car from National and picked out a Hyundai Santa Fe. National allows you to pick a car in a category rather than assigning you one and I can see why people like it. A very smooth ride, I'm impressed with the improvements Hyundai has in its car line up.
