Carson

I'm staying in Carson at the Doubletree Carson on and off for the next few months. This Doubletree is the exact opposite of the San Pedro location. The hotel is situated next to the civic center and not much in the immediate area for walking expeditions. The hotel has upgraded its facilities inside with carpet and furnishings. The hotel bar and restaurant is full service and appears fairly active in the evenings. There is a nice outdoor lounge attached to the restaurant/bar that would make you think you are not in Carson and the pool is fairly large. The breakfast here is also full American buffet with a cook to order omelet station. I was surprised to see the number of Indian clientele this hotel attracts. The restaurant carried a number of Indian specific foods in the morning.

I don't know if TVs have changed recently but I am using the flat panel screens in hotels to view my laptop and watch Netflix and such. I am finding that the TVs are able to switch inputs easily and let you switch to view the HDMI input. That wasn't the case a few years ago....tells you how often I've tried to use a hotel TV room recently.

Rooms

Week 1 - had a non-HHonors floor (4th floor). The hotel was sold out and I had to take a double room instead of a king but the room was still spacious. In my last post, I made a housekeeping comment and so I find it funny at this hotel housekeeping took away everything in the bathroom. They took the towels, soaps, shampoo, conditioner, etc. even if half used. At least I got fresh ones every time. I normally wouldn't think of it but it is such a contrast from the last hotel.

This week, I hit Souplantation, The Refinery (hotel restaurant), Carl's Jr., and BYOPizza for dinner. An eclectic choice of chain restaurants except for the hotel restaurant. BYOPizza had an partnership with a local high end bakery that specialized in liquor cakes. Interesting but not enough for me to fork outdoor $10 for a small bundt the size of a baseball to try.

Week 2 - checked in early and was given a corner king junior suite on the 5th floor. I was excited to see a fridge! I will have to shoot for these rooms in the upcoming weeks. Not sure if the "HHonors" floors are the same but just high up on the building.

Dinner this week was at Tony's BBQ & Bibingkinitan at 860 E Carson St, Carson, CA 90745,  Togo's, and Sriracha Thai. This week's dinner was more Asian oriented and I enjoyed the Filipino bbq from Tony's and the thai food. Surprisingly, I was irritated with Togo's as it took almost an hour to get a sandwich. I am not sure why the girls couldn't figure out how to make the sandwiches faster but it was certainly not fast food casual.

Week 6

I'm back on the 4th floor again but this double room has a fridge. I'm not sure if the rooms facing the pool have fridges but I will take what little perk I can get for this sold out hotel. I'm really surprised how full this hotel is given its location. It appears popular with tourist groups if the people in the lobby is any indication.
Doubletree Carson Double Room

Dinner this week was at Charo Chicken, Tony's BBQ & Bibingkinitan, Polly's Pies, and The Refinery. I had forgotten how much Charo Chicken was tasty; it is a better tasting chicken than El Pollo Loco. I tried the pork bowl at Tony's and it was good and filling. At Polly's, I had the dinner special of shepherd's pie with a slice of the banberry pie. Both were tasty. The dessert is basically a banana cream pie with strawberries on top. The crust was a nice and crisp - shortbread-like. At The Refinery, I thought to try the orange chicken and italian sandwich. Both were really good to my surprise. The orange chicken isn't like Panda Express but I'm ok with the sauce being less sweet.

Week 7

This week I checked in online and after much debate decided to get the third floor. The novelty of being high in the hotel has worn off even though I haven't been on a high floor. The ability to walk up instead of waiting for elevators has some appeal and probably better for my health. In this week, I opted to be in the end of the hallway and close to the stairs thinking that it would be an easy exit. It is and isn't. The housekeeping has been weird on this floor, only bath towels were refreshed until I took a hand towel from the gym. Then I started getting wash towels but still not the full set. I think I will shoot for a different floor next time.

Decided to snack at Wingstop one night and Yang Chow. I never went to a Wingstop until very recently and I do enjoy their wings more so than Hooters. I also have never been to Yang Chow and can say that I'm not interested in returning. The world famous slippery shrimp reminds me of a candied honey walnut shrimp dish you find in many Taiwanese cafes except no walnut and extra sweet.

Week 8

Checked into the sixth floor this week and was able to snag a king room. I'm beginning to think my first room was the only room without a mini fridge as every other room since has had one. As expected the "HHonors" floors are just the same as the regular floors.

Dinner for the week was at The Refinery, Grimaldi's PizzeriaJack in the Box, Tony's BBQ & Bibingkinitan. I ordered a clam chowder and club sandwich and found both very good to my surprise at The Refinery. The bacon in the club was a little too stiff for my taste but overall a good experience. At Grimaldi's, it is half off wine on Tuesdays and my group took advantage of that deal. Although the next morning, I had a slight headache so I'm not sure if the wine was worth it since I only had three glasses. At Jack in the Box, I had chicken nuggets and the croissant donut. After having the nuggets, I think I like the chicken nuggets more than the McDonald version. I also found the croissant donut pretty good. Of all the knock off cronuts I've tried, it is sad to say that Jack in the Box has pulled it off. At Tony's, I opted for the three meat bowl and enjoyed the simple meal.

Week 9

A short week due to an upcoming weekend trip, I checked into the 7th floor this time. The air conditioner was noisier than the other rooms I've been and I could see why some of the reviews on TripAdvisor complained about noisy air conditioners. The front desk mentioned that some of the units are older and this one is probably at the end of its life cycle.

This week, I ordered pizza for delivery from Bambino's Pizza. I ordered their large one topping pizza special and the delivery was fast, pizza piping hot, and not greasy. All pluses in my book. The next night, grabbed dinner at El Pollo Loco out of convenience. Of all the fast food places, El Pollo Loco's salsa selection is one of the better ones. The next night, I went to eat at Hero Shop and had a tasty banh mi pork and banh mi fatty brisket. I liked the fatty brisket as it reminded me of pho. Pretty amazing considering pho is a soup. Afterwards, grabbed a nacho waffle sundae from Peddler's Creamery. The raspberry pop tart ice cream and peanut butter was perfect with the cinnamon sugar coated waffle chips.

Week 10

I actually split this week between the Sheraton Cerritos and the Doubletree Carson. I've officially made it to gold status on SPG. My stay at the Sheraton was different in that I was offered internet access and breakfast. The room was still the same as last time though. I decided to stay within walking distance of the hotel for dinner, so I walked across the street to Yasai Grill and Tapioca Express in Cerritos Town Center. The breakfast buffet for $18 is not worth the price. Generally, hotel buffets are not worth the price but compared to the Doubletree, this one lacks variety and quality.

At the Doubletree, I was upgraded to a junior suite and it was the same room as last time I was upgraded! Long days at work meant that it was quick dinner meals at Jack in the Box, Khun 9 Thai Kitchen on 2018 Carson St., Torrance, CA 90501, and The Local Place. I found out that a colleague was also staying at the Doubletree and tried out a new thai restaurant, so far Srirachi Thai is the best Thai restaurant in the area. At The Local Place, I'm a fan of the miso salmon bowl. They also have a dole pineapple whip parfait dessert going on for a "limited time." Not sure on the time frame, maybe just a summer thing.

Week 11

At the Doubletree this week and received a junior suite upgrade again. This time I'm on the seventh floor so the room was blazing hot when I walked in. The hotel seems quieter this week and I'm sure is the reason why I was able to get the bigger room.

Had dinner at the Malibu Fish Grill, Pho King Way, and The Refinery. Since I had a buy one get one free coupon at the Malibu Fish Grill, I bought a wahoo and salmon sandwiches saving the salmon for lunch later. At Pho King Way, I enjoyed my bowl of pho. At The Refinery, I tried the nachos grande and crème brulee cheesecake. The cheesecake was more of a brown sugar cheesecake but it was tasty enough. I also enjoyed the house moscato.

Week 12

This week, I was given a room on the the third floor, same junior suite. I could start getting used to this.

Grabbed dinner at Jack in the Box, Aloha Pizza and Shaved Ice at 1534 W Artesia Blvd
Gardena, CA 90248, and IHOP. For some reason, I have a bum gift card and only this Jack in the Box understands how to process the card manually. At Aloha, had the large haleakala pizza which is essentially a spicy chicken Hawaiian pizza. At IHOP, I was craving pancakes but ended up trying their blueberry cheesecake waffle. Despite having breakfasts every morning at the Doubletree, I don't like buffet pancakes, French toast, and waffles. It just isn't the type of food that can be mass produced in my opinion.

Week 13

This week, I am back on the 7th floor and in a junior suite. This particular junior suite is on the opposite corner. For this particular hotel, the junior suites seem to be along the V of the building and the previous rooms I've been put in the "right" side. So this is my first "left" side junior suite. So the room layout is opposite of what I'm used to. The main difference I feel is that the living room area seems smaller but the bedroom side does seem larger. I assume it is a wash in the end. Just interesting to me....gotta find something after three months of living here.

Went to Islands, El Pollo Inka, and Grimaldi's for dinner. At Islands, I grabbed a burger with fries. My companion enjoys the Islands seasoning and bottomless fries. At El Pollo Inka, I ordered the Lomo Saltado. I think I will stick with their chicken as I've had better at other Peruvian restaurants. At Grimaldi's, I shared one cheese pizza and pepperoni pizza with some ex-colleagues.

Week 14

This week, I was given a pleasant surprise of a corner suite on the 8th floor. This particular suite location allows for a balcony and central air conditioning! Most of the rooms I've been in have all wall units but this particular room has central air conditioning. Although the room is a little noisier because the balcony and room faces the freeway, I prefer the traffic noise than the wall units going on throughout the night.

Dinner this week was at Which Wich. At this particular location, I was intrigued by the R&D sandwich Banh Mi. For some reason, Vietnamese cuisine has taken hold and I thought the American fast food version was pretty good.

Week 15

This week, I checked back onto the 4th floor and in a junior suite. In this week, I found out that the hotel places two communal microwaves on floors 2 and 6. Since I haven't been on either of these two levels, I never noticed them in the vending areas.

Dinner this week was at Habana Vieja Cuban Cuisine and Cafe at 1648 W Carson St., Ste B,
TorranceCA 90501, and ordered the lechon asado. It was similar to pulled pork. It was good but I would try something else.

Week 16

I'm back on the 8th floor and the same back corner balcony suite.

It is a short week for me since I'm heading out for a vacation the next week. Dined at BJ's Restaurant & BrewhouseTam O'Shanter, and desserted at Rita's Italian Ice. I always enjoy the fried chicken salad at BJ's and the pizookies of course. At Tam O'Shanter, I enjoyed my chile verde which was a special for the day and a chocolate souffle. At Rita's, I enjoyed my mango ice with orange cream gelato which made it kind of like a creamsicle.

Week 18

I thought I would be clever this week and check in online first. Little did I know that the room numbering are not the same on the 8th floor as the rest of the floors and thought I selected a junior suite. Luckily, the front desk folks switched me to my usual third floor junior suite.

For the week, dined at El Pollo Loco, The Refinery at Doubletree, Grimaldi's, Jack in the Box, and CBS Seafood on 700 N Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. I tried a lighter fare at El Pollo Loco and had the chicken avocado burrito, got lazy and went downstairs to the hotel restaurant ordering a soup (I also got a cold from Vietnam last week), pizza at Grimaldi's with Oreo cheesecake, and leftovers from my 2 item combo and a side of bbq pork from CBS since I had to go to the Chinese consulate during the day and made a stop in Chinatown.

Week 19

I had mentioned to the front desk that this might be the last week I would be staying at the Doubletree. So when I checked in this week, I was put in a junior suite again but on the sixth floor. After all this time, I think the only floor I haven't been on is the second floor at this point. I was also pleasantly suprised with a cheese plate in the room. I can only assume that it is for all the months we've been here.

For the week, dined at Denny's and Choco Chicken. I tried the red velvet hush puppies sundae for dessert and I am hooked. It is like cake donut holes. I was intrigued by the use of chocolate in chicken and thought it was worth checking out. It also helped that I had a Blackboard Eats code for 30% off. The fried chicken is pretty good but pass on the mac n cheese.

Week 21

I'm back on the fourth floor in a junior suite and a plate of cheese was sent once checked in. Not sure if this is going to be a standard thing now but I dig it. This week, one of the two wall air conditioning units failed. It was interesting to see the hotel replacing the whole unit and even got a new thermostat with it. The Doubletree was sold out for the last night of the week and I transitioned to the Hampton Inn Los Angeles/Torrance/Carson hotel. I haven't stayed at this location since 2007 when I was forced out of my condo due to mold remediation. Ironic that I'm back at this hotel for another home construction issue!

This week, dined at Roy'sScardino's, and Pho King Way. Roy's is having a promotional offer of $36.95 for a three course meal on Mondays. Bargain if you know Roy's pricing. I haven't been to Scardino's in a while and with the holiday during the middle of the week, I was nearby to enjoy their early supper dinner prix fixe meal under $20. Still feeling under the weather from my vacation, I opted to have pho ga at Pho King Way and it was pretty good. I'm usually a die hard pho with beef but I can be convinced to go chicken here. I did not know until looking up their website that there are two locations. Hopefully, they continue to do well.

Week 22

The house project should be completing soon and this might be my last week at the Doubletree this week. I have enjoyed getting to know the folks here and they have made my stay very pleasant. Now that Hilton has thrown a winter promotion, I am incentivized to not stay at the Doubletree because they are not participating. On top of that, Starwood is also throwing out some hefty promotions. So I might switch if the price is right.

I'm back on the seventh floor with the noisy air conditioning unit. Learning from my lesson last week, I called front desk to see if the facilities folks could check out the machine and I ended up with a new one installed. It took a couple of hours but I have a brand new unit now. Future guests will thank me.

This week, dined at Souplantation, Poke Etc., and Tita Celia. I was craving some soup and salad being sick this month. I was bracing for a madhouse but it was unusually quiet. It was actually easy to find a table. The seasonal cake (carrot cake) was ok but the chicken pot pie soup hit the spot. I have always enjoyed the poke from Poke Etc. and the lady was nice enough to let me split the choice of poke on my poke bowl order. I also grabbed two for the price of one spam musubi. Sometimes it works out coming in end of the day. I wanted to try another Filipino restaurant and went to Tita Celia's. A little too authentic for me as I don't know the names of the dishes being offered and the clientele were all Filipino. The food was good though the rice was a little too wet for my taste.

Week 24

It appears I'm still hanging out the Carson area and checked into the Hampton Inn Los Angeles/Carson/Torrance this week. The contractor is promising that it will be possible to sleep in the house by the end of this week. I was able to find a comparable rate to the Doubletree at the Hampton Inn and maximize the double points HHonors promotion running at the moment. Ironically, I have several work events that will put me at the Doubletree several times this week.

Dined at Shuchan on 15915 Western Ave., Gardena, CA 90247, McDonald's, Ramen Izakaya Ajido. and Smash Burger. I purchased a 'ramen pass' from lalalausa.com which offers half off price on specific ramen entrees. At Shu-chan, I had the shoyu ramen. It was good enough but the restaurant seemed pretty quiet and mostly long time locals that frequent the restaurant. I had a McRib meal from McDonald's. Not sure how long the McRib will be around but I'm getting my fill as much as possible. Went out and had ramen again at Ramen Izakaya Ajido. The special was a garlic black shisen ramen with fried chicken. It was pretty awesome. Finished off the week with a jalapeno avocado burger and peanut butter jelly shake at Smash Burger.

Week 25

So it looks like the end is almost here and I checked into the Doubletree for this week. I was given the Presidential Suite this week. After all this time at the hotel, I was given the room. Being curious about the room, it is a very spacious room with a separate living room. It definitely is made for a nice party with the patio off the side. I think the patio is the same size as the room.
