Long Beach
A local trip for a wedding event in Long Beach. The venue was at the Hotel Maya. A hidden part of Los Angeles, the hotel is on the port side of Long Beach. There is also a Marriott Residence Inn next door. I would not have guessed that one hotel let alone two would be in this part of Long Beach.
I'm much more used to downtown Long Beach or Belmont Shores area. Luckily, this is a Doubletree branded hotel and I decided to use the block rate to stay for the wedding and avoid having to leave the wedding early and/or drag tired people home. The hotel was pleasant and recently renovated according to its website. The rooms were nice and it did seem new. Being an outdoor layout, the rains can make a number on this location as evidenced by the slight warping of the wood in the public areas as well as the entryway to the room.
The hotel restaurant, Fuego, is hit and miss. The first time I ate was dinner and the food was fantastic. The restaurant is an outdoors restaurant and the views are great. The second time I ate was mid-day snack. The staff seemed confused because they were serving Sunday brunch and we were only interested in coffee and dessert. The service was slow as evidenced by the pool of melted ice cream that went with my fried bananas. The third and final time I ate was for breakfast. The food was good, a bit on the small side and coldish. Compared to the breakfast buffet being served, it might have been the better option to pay for the full hot buffet rather than the entrees. Moral of the story, stick with dinner.
I also checked in at the Westin Long Beach. Westins are always a hit and miss with me. Some are very nice and well maintained, while others have seen better days. In this particular case, the Long Beach location must attract many clients as the hotel was spacious, clean, and well maintained. The front desk indicated I was Platinum with SPG which I'm not. The hotels this year has confused me with referring to either my gold or platinum status. It's hard for me to know whether I should expect the platinum benefits or not. Maybe next year, I will have stayed enough to achieve platinum status again. In the meantime, I'm happy with gold. The room was nice and roomy.
