Vancouver
I'm here for a couple of days for family reasons. I was put into First Class on a United flight and wasn't sure if it was because they had room or that I requested a wheelchair. In any case, it was a pleasant experience particularly for my companion. I also found the snack box amusing and it was sufficient for my needs. Too bad, I can't get the return flight in the same class! ;p
As this is my first time travelling with special needs, it was interesting going through the airports escorted about even through customs. I don't know if it was faster than walking around but it certainly was interesting the routes they take you through the airport.
Grabbed a Nissan Versa from Avis after landing. I haven't driven one in awhile and I think it has somewhat improved in handling. The mileage remains undetermined since I can't figure out liters to gallons to miles per gallon....
I checked into the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown hotel. I haven't been in a few years but I find the hotel appealing. It is attached to a huge asian mall (Crystal Mall), I haven't figured out if paying for parking is a necessity. I was put in a corner suite on a high floor and the views are pretty nice since the mountains still have snow on them.
The weather is a little dreary and opted to spend the afternoon at the Crystal Mall which is where the hotel is attached. After realizing I needed money, I went to the bank in the mall and then wandered next door to Han Ju Tofu Hot Pot on 4500 Kingsway, #1218, Burnaby, BC V5H2A9. It isn't an extensive menu but the food was good and reasonably priced. I had the Korean BBQ bowl which was tasty and a red bean soup dessert. Afterwards, wandered around the mall and found a Beard Papa's. I hadn't been to one in awhile and grabbed a dulce de leche which I think is relatively new. This location must have a high turnover as the puff pastry was delish! Also eyed the roasted pork at the various BBQ delis in the mall, mental check to try out tomorrow.
I did wander up to the executive lounge at the Hilton in the evening. I was surprised to see that alcohol isn't included in the lounge amenities. Normally, the international locations include them. The food selection was substantial (compared to US locations), a salmon entree appears to be a staple in the evening menu.
The next day, wandered over to the Granville Island Public Market. Looked at all the arts and crafts stores as well as checked out the local produce. Everything seemed pretty fresh! I've come to realize that I like Vancouver alot more than Seattle although both cities have similar characteristics. It just seems better north. I enjoyed a corn chowder soup in a cup (covered with some puff pastry) from A La Mode Pie Cafe and sushi from one of the food court restaurants in the Market. I was pleasantly surprised about the quality and taste of the sushi as it was one of those prepackaged deals. Did some shopping and helped out the Canadian economy as well.
Afterwards, drove to Stanley Park but didn't stay long. Just drove along the paths around the park as the weather was getting slightly worse but it was a nice drive along the edges of the islet.
Went back to Crystal Mall to find some items to take home. Failing that, grabbed some dumplings from Wang's Shangai Noodle. It was pretty tasty and cheap! I think I like it more than Din Tai Fung. :O Later, drove to the Metropolis mall but didn't find anything appealing despite the huge selection of stores.
